Cave Stories ( ???? , D? kutsu Monogatari ) is a video game of the adventures of metroidvania released in 2004 for Windows PCs. It was developed for five years by Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya in his spare time. Cave Story features 2D platform mechanics and reminiscent of the classic games Amaya played in his youth, such as Metroid (1986) and Castlevania (1986) . After its initial self-published release, Cave Story is slowly gaining popularity on the Internet. It gets wide critical acclaim for its catchy characters, settings, stories and gameplay. Story Cave is considered by many to be a classic indie game, based on a one-person development team and its influence in the gaming world.

The independent developer Nicalis worked with Amaya to market the game to WiiWare and DSiWare in 2010. The enhanced version, Cave Story , was released for Steam in November 2011 and for Nintendo 3DS in October 2012. 3D remake of the game, titled Cave Story 3D , developed by Nicalis and published by NIS America for Nintendo 3DS in November 2011. Gameplay

Players control the characters on the screen directly using the keyboard or gamepad. Players thrive by navigating platform game puzzles and shoot enemies with equipped weapons. When players collect some weapons, they can toggle at any time by pressing a button. Defeating enemies sometimes produces yellow triangular objects, which give experience points to the weapons when collected. Weapons can be upgraded to level three, but taking damage causes the weapon to lose experience and level. Increased capacity for health and missiles spread throughout the gaming world. Players must interact with various non-player characters and objects to complete the game.

Plot

Settings

The Cave Story takes place inside the inside of the floating island. The island is inhabited by Mimigas, a race of living things, like a rabbit. Certain species of red flowers that grow on the island cause the usually peaceful Mimigas to fall into a great madness when digested. The island also hides artefacts called the Devil's Kingdom, which has enormous magical powers. Robotic army troops were sent to floating islands on military expeditions, seeking to capitalize on the Devil's Crown as a weapon for war in the surface world. These robots massacred Mimigas indiscriminately in their quest for the crown, but were defeated when Mimigas decided to eat the red flower as a last resort. Shortly before the game began, Professor Booster, Sakamoto's family, and various assistants formed a scientific party to research the island, but they became stranded when their medical doctor managed to get the Crown: he then forced the expedition to look for red flowers.

Story

His character woke up in the cave without remembering how he got there. He found a village of Mimigas, which is being persecuted by the Doctor. Doctors Misery and Balrog wait for Sue Sakamoto, a girl who has turned into Mimiga. Not finding it, they wrongly kidnapped another Mimiga named Toroko. The player finds Sue at Egg Corridor, where he finds the eggs of a Sky Dragon, allowing him to escape from a floating island when it hatches. Sue tried to save her brother Kazuma, but the King, the leader of Mimiga Village, arrested him and was responsible for the kidnapping of Toroko. Sue duty player by taking Kazuma from Grasstown. After releasing him, they meet Professor Booster, who reveals that Doctor plans to use red flowers in Mimigas to create troops to take over the surface world. Booster sends players to the Sand Zone to destroy the red flowers before Doctors can find them. While there, players meet Curly Brace, a female robot who also has no memories of his past, and Jenka, an old wizard who is Misery's mother and keeper of red flowers. Jenka mentions the player character as a "warrior from the surface", one of many who was sent to the island to slaughter Mimigas. Balrog managed to steal the keys to a warehouse of red flowers from Jenka, which urged players to stop them. Before the player can reach the warehouse, however, Doctor forces Toroko's bait-captured red flower and seriously wounds the King, leaving the player to fight Toroko, who eventually dies.

Tribulation drove players to the Labyrinth deep in the island as punishment for interrupting the Doctor's plan. Curly Brace has also been thrown into the Labyrinth and they work together to escape. Balrog helps them to move large stones blocking the way out, revealing its good nature. The couple find and defeat the Core, a magical creature whose power makes the island afloat. However, the Doctor stepped in to save it before the island collapsed. Depending on certain conditions, players can save Curly Brace, who has sacrificed the air tank to save the player's character. When he returned to Mimiga Village, he discovered that Doctor had captured Mimigas. At Egg Corridor, Kazuma offers the player of choice to escape from the island with him using Sky Dragon, which leads to an alternative end in which Doctors conquer the surface world while Kazuma and players hide in the mountains. Players instead choose to confront Doctors and destroy the Inti island, which will restore Mimigas to normal. The player scales the outer wall of the island to reach the Plantation where the Doctor uses Mimigas as a slave laborer to grow red flowers. The Doctor's Waiter catches the player and places him in a jail cell with Sue. He was taken away before the player got up, but his letter revealed that the Doctor was a member of a research expedition that included Sue's family and Professor Booster, but he betrayed them once he found the Demon Crown. Sue directs players to find her mother who may have plans to stop the Doctor.

If the player saved the previous Curly Brace, players can find items to restore their memories. He remembered that the player's character name was Quote, and that they were not the killer robots that massacred Mimigas in the past. Instead, they are sent to destroy the Demon's crown to prevent his power from falling into the wrong hands. The quote found Sue's mother, Momorin, who was building a rocket that would allow access to the top of the doctor's dwelling island. After helping him complete the rocket, Quote confronts Misery and the Doctor. The Doctor has purified the essence of red flowers into crystals, allowing him to survive even after the Quote destroys his body. Spirit Doctor has the core of the island, but the Quote succeeds in destroying it as well, causing the island to begin falling to Earth. If the player has saved Curly and recovered his memory, they can proceed to a bonus stage called Bloody Sanctuary where Curly can be found and rescued; This is where Ballos - the creator of Demon Crown and Jenka's sister - is jailed. A powerful magician who went mad and destroyed his homeland after being tortured by a jealous king, Ballos was sealed deep within the island by his sister. At some point, Misery's nephew forced him to create a demon's crown, but he and Balrog were cursed to serve anyone who owned it. Moreover, it is expressed through the narrative that the Demon Crown will repair itself if it is destroyed, and will only really lose its power if Ballos is killed, requiring that Quote and Curly take his life.

With the help of Curly Brace, the Quotes beat Ballos and stop the negative energy sources that caused the island to fall, saving its inhabitants. Balrog saved them both before they were destroyed by the collapsed Ballos prison - he was sent by Misery as a thank-you for breaking his curse. Quotes, Curly Brace, and Balrog leave the island to live their days in peace.

Development

Daisuke "Pixel" Amaya developed Cave Story in his spare time for five years. He started the project while he was in college and continued working on it after getting a job as a software developer. He started off by writing the title of the music screen and programming the character's imperfect character. The idea for cave arrangement evolved spontaneously as he created a number of enclosed spaces. Amaya acknowledged this lack of planning led to "phone problems" because she lacked map editing and data management tools. Amaya explains this game has an "old-fashioned feel", reminiscent of the games it plays as a child like Metroid . More importantly, this "retro" design option allows it to create large volumes of its own artwork, which is impossible for 3D games.

In the post-mortem Game Game Conference project, he emphasized the role of pragmatic design in shaping the game. While designing the main character, Excerpts, Amaya drew inspiration from Mario's distinctive original appearance - a large, expressive face and a high contrast between whites and red shirts make it stand out from the dark cave backdrop. Most other characters show bright skin or white clothing for the same reason. To create an impressive level, Amaya designed it around a theme, such as "warmth" for Egg Corridor or "arid and oppressive" for the Sand Zone. Instead of the tutorial level, a concept that Amaya does not like, the first level of the game gives the player two paths, one of which is blocked until it picks up an item from another path. This arrangement, inspired by the opening of Metroid , "lets players feel like they've solved their own problems" and continues throughout the game. In the beta version of the game, all enemies are formed like a bar of soap, a concept that develops into a Balrog character. There are also characters of the "frog prince" who can travel through the water more easily. These beta elements are incorporated into the Nintendo 3DS version of the game.

Reception

The original Cave Story gained widespread critical recognition. 1UP.com describes it as "so huge that it rivals modern [Game Boy Advance] Castlevania and Metroid games in terms of scope and play time". Matt Miller from Game Game observes that Cave Story combines elements of Metroid , Ninja Gaiden , Mega Man , The Legend of Zelda , and Castlevania into an overall "exciting, challenging, and long enough". Inside the Mac Games is considered the popularity of games with "polished nuances, interesting storylines, and interesting artwork". Electronic Gaming Monthly states that "the growing Western indie game scene owes huge debt to Japanese pioneers like Studio Pixel, whose freeware hit Cave Story proves that with vision, , and passion, one developer can still create deep and exciting action games ". Jonathan Holmes of Destructoid called the Cave Story an important game, observing its influence on indie artistic games like Braid , as well as the continuing relevance of the 2D game design (see Capcom's Mega Man 9 ). He also compared the game design with Shigeru Miyamoto in his ability to teach without tutorials, as in the beginning of Super Mario Bros. In July 2006, Cave Story got 1 place on the Super PLAY 'list of the 50 best freeware games of all time. In July 2015, the game was ranked 14th on the list of 15 Best Games Since Year 2000 in USgamer.

The WiiWare version has received most positive reviews, with central criticism being priced at 1200 Wii Point (US $ 12, Ã, Â £ 10), after years of free play. Jeremy Parish of 1UP.com praised the graphical updates, which "does not sacrifice classically influenced [game] charm". He also said that Classic Controller and Wii Remote are superior to the original PC keyboard input. Regarding price issues, he explains that "the prospect of Amaya has finally gotten a bit of something for the hard work she invests in this work, I think is poetic satisfying" and "really worth your money". John Teti from Eurogamer had similar sentiments, but also noted technical issues with remixed music, recommending the original soundtrack. Edge compares the remake to The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition , satisfying modern tastes with improved graphics and dummy fans with the option of switching to original graphics. The Hatfield Daemon of IGN feels that Cave Story is included in the Nintendo system "and notes the gameplay similarities with Blaster Master , where the damage reduces the power of the weapon as well. Story Cave was nominated for Game of the Year at the 2010 Nintendo Power Awards Awards, as well as WiiWare of the Year Game.

Criticism of Cave Story 3D echoed the WiiWare version. Many reviewers warn that graphical updates do not justify the $ 40 starting price point, especially with cheaper or free game versions available through the download service. Parish defended the release, which gained satisfaction from the availability of the game as a physical cartridge. Holmes praised the new dynamic and graphical camera system, comparing it to the classic Disney movie. He regards this release as "the best version of the game, [but] not always the definitive version". Jane Douglas of GameSpot feels that the 3DS Circle Pad is perfect for game control schemes. Audrey Drake from IGN notes that 3D effects make it difficult to distinguish between specific platforms between background and foreground, a complaint shared by Douglas. Simon Parkin of England Official Nintendo Magazine is more critical, citing the lack of detail in 3D models and a color palette that is too dark. Japanese magazine Famitsu Weekly ' Four reviewers scored 7, 7, 8, and 8 points from 10 to 30 out of 40 points, showing average reviews. This version was nominated for Best Adventure Game at the 2011 Awards Nintendo Power .
