Landmaster is a unique 12 wheel amphibious articulation vehicle built by Dean Jeffries at Jeffries Automotive in Universal City, California for the 1977 science fiction film Damnation Alley. Despite the appearance of two Landmasters in the film (achieved by photography and modeling), only one was built, at a cost of $ 350,000 in 1976.

History

Originally from the Southern California car culture for many years, Landmaster was parked in full view next to the Dean Jeffries automotive store on Cahuenga Boulevard in North Hollywood, California from 1977 to 2005.

Landmaster sold to private owners in 2005 and returned to its original condition as shown in Damnation Alley. Landmaster then in circuit show car for several years. In 2007 it was featured on San Francisco Rod & amp; Custom Show at Cow Palace in San Francisco as part of a special exhibition with films and other popular TV cars.

One time in the late 2000s, Landmaster destroyed while in the warehouse. The damage is relatively small, but repairs and restoration are required. In March 2014, Landmaster was moved from its storage location in Campbell, California to a new maintenance and storage facility in central California (see photos and Gallery).

Construction

Popular Science describes Landmaster:

Three independent drive sources run from gasoline power stations. Use the semi-truck section of the drive train. Can operate with front or back triner wheels out of commission. The sides and top hatch in the main and back and top units in the after section. Full running lights and brake lights for urban street use. An external video camera is mounted on the front pylon located just behind the front up hatch. Can also house antenna. All pylons are hardened and armored. Can operate in water and will remain sealed when fully submerged. Can float while half full of water.

While the film is fictional, Landmaster vehicles are real. In the story, Landmaster is designed to use as many standard truck parts as possible, so that every junkyard will have whatever it takes to repair. The original Landmaster is powered by Ford's 390-cubic inch (6.4Ã.L) industrial engine, and uses the back ends of two commercial trucks and Allison automatic truck transmission. It features a custom-built functional "tri-star" wheel setting, which can really help it crawl over the rocks. All 12 wheels are driven, but only 8 are normally in contact with the road surface at a time.

The vehicle is driven not by turning the front wheels, but by bending the center with a hydraulic tails to produce a turn, similar to a large construction equipment. The Landmaster Bodywork is made with a 3-inch (<3 cm) spin-off steel coating, which helps it reach a scale of over 10 tons. The design strength allows it to survive from a 25-foot (7.6 m) leap during testing without damage.
