Nail disease

A nail disease or onicosis is a disease or nail deformity. Although the nails are structures produced by the skin and are auxiliary to the skin, the nail disease has a different classification because they have their own signs and symptoms that may be related to other medical conditions. Some nail conditions that show signs of infection or inflammation may require medical help.

Nail examination can provide clues to the internal condition of the body as well. Nail disease can be very subtle and should be evaluated by a dermatologist with a focus on specific drug areas. A nail technician may be the first to know the subtle changes in nail health.

Flexibility

• The fragility is associated with iron deficiency, thyroid problems, and impaired renal function.
• Splitting and fraying associated with psoriasis and folic acid deficiency, protein, and vitamin C.
• Unusual thickness is associated with circulation issues.

Shapes and textures

• Clubbing nails - spikes that curl around the fingertips with swollen nailbeds are associated with lack of oxygen and lung, heart, or liver disease.
• Koilonychia - spoon, or spikes that grow up. Associated with iron deficiency anemia or deficiency B ₁₂ .
• Pitting of the nails is associated with Psoriasis.
• The Beau line is a horizontal bulge in the nail.

Nail bed whole color change

• Yellowing of the nail bed is associated with chronic bronchitis, lymphatic problems, diabetes, and liver disorders.
• A brown or copper nail coating is associated with arsenic or copper poisoning, and a localized yeast infection.
• Redness is associated with heart conditions.

Changes in colors and other marks

• Melanonychia (a darkening or not growing long streak), especially on the thumb or toe, may indicate subungual melanoma.
• White lines on the nail (leukonychia striata, or transverse leukonikia) may be the Mees line or the Muehrcke line.
• Small white patches are known as leukonychia punctata.
• Dark nails are associated with B ₁₂ deficiencies.
• The stain on the nail plate (not the nail bed) relates to smoking, and the use of a girlfriend.

Treatment

In about half of cases of suspected nail fungus there is actually no fungal infection, but only some nail dystrophy. Before starting oral antifungal therapy, healthcare providers should ensure yeast infections. Provision of treatment to persons without infection is unnecessary health care and causes unnecessary exposure to side effects.
