Rage (styled like RAGE ) is a first person shooter video game developed by id Software released in months October 2011. It was first presented as a technology demo on June 11, 2007, at the Apple Worldwide Developers Conference, and was officially announced on August 2, 2007 at QuakeCon. Rage is using id Software Tech gaming engine id 5, and is the last game released by the company under the supervision of founder John Carmack.

Rage is set in near post-apocalyptic, following the impact of the Apophis 99942 asteroid on Earth. Players take control of Nicholas Raine, a soldier who was put into hibernation in an underground shelter that appeared into the vacant lot a century later, and found himself a fugitive by an organization of oppressors known as the Authority. This game is depicted similar to the movie Mad Max 2, and for video games like Fallout and Borderlands.

Rage received mainly positive reviews, with reviewers praising the mechanisms and graphics of combat games, while criticizing the lack of stories, characters, and directions. The iOS version, titled Rage: Mutant Bash TV , received mixed and positive reviews. Bethesda announces the sequel, Rage 2 , in May 2018.

Gameplay

The game consists mainly of first-person shooters and the driving segment, with players using their vehicles to explore the world and travel among missions.

The battle is done from the point of view of the first person; this player is armed with a variety of upgraded weapons, as well as crossbow weapons, and such a boomerang called "wingsticks" that can be used for hidden attacks. There are several types of ammunition available for each weapon, to allow players to better customize their playing style. For example, crossbow primary ammunition is a metal bolt, but it can also shoot electrification bolts, explosive bolts, and more. There are two standard varieties of enemies: enemies with firearms that will take cover and exchanging fire with players, and close-range enemies that will fill players and attack with melee weapons.

There are various vehicle events for players to participate in, including race and checkpoints. Racing events may or may not have an opponent, and some of them are armed races while others do not. Players have the ability to add their cars with various items and improvements they can get by completing the event. Rage also features some role-playing game (RPG) elements, including inventory systems, looting systems, and various types of ammunition. Players have the option to customize their weapons and vehicles, as well as build various items using recipes collected. Not only vehicles that can be used for racing, but, like all the sandbox games in the open world, they can be used to travel from one location to another with occasional attacks from enemy vehicles. There are also side missions and a number of other small exploration elements.

Multiplayer

Rage has two multiplayer modes: "Road Rage" and "Wasteland Legends". In Road Rage, up to four players compete in free games for all that takes place in the arena designed to take advantage of the vehicle. The goal is to collect rally points that appear around the arena while killing opponents and stealing their points. Legends of the Wasteland is a series of two-player co-op missions based on stories that are heard throughout the single player campaign. There are a total of 9 destinations in this type of game.

Plot

On August 23, 2029, the asteroid 99942 Apophis collided with the Earth, effectively destroying human civilization and turning the world into a desert. Welcome people come together to form settlements around oases and other practical or habitable locations, while the waste is polluted by bandit clans, and mutants, which attack all normal humans in greedy mobs.

In 2135, former US Navy Lieutenant Nicholas Raine emerged from an underground shelter called Ark, 106 years after being put into stasis. This underground shelter is a direct result of the Eden Project, a massive international undertaking in which hundreds of Cryogenic, containing arks, are sealed beneath the surface of the Earth to preserve enough human populations to rebuild civilization after an asteroid collision. The Eden Project was far less successful than expected, because Raine's Ark was particularly heavily damaged, with all the inhabitants killed and equipment destroyed, and she woke up alone with no specific purpose.

Raine enters the surface, where he is immediately attacked by bandits, but is rescued by Dan Hagar (voiced by actor John Goodman), a local desert settler who takes Raine to his settlement. Hagar informs him that a powerful technologically advanced organization known as the Authority, who considers itself the only true government in the desert, is hunting for the victims of the Ark for an unknown purpose. Raine briefly assisted Hagar's settlement and others in the local area by completing several small jobs, and during this time it was revealed that the nanotrites injected into Raine's blood before she was sent to hibernation had given her super human ability to help her survive in harsh environments. , but has made it valuable to the Authority. Hagar believes Raine's continued existence is too dangerous for the settlements, and sends her to the nearby town of Wellspring.

At Wellspring, Raine helps the city with various problems like fighting bandits and mutants, and transporting supplies. Finally, he deals with Dr. Kvasir, an elderly scientist who had previously worked for the Authority, who told Raine about the inhumane experiments they were responsible for, such as mutant creation. Kvasir put him in contact with Resistance, an armed anti-armed group, where he was in charge of rescuing their leader, Captain Marshall, who was recently jailed by the Authority. Raine once again drew the attention of the Authority, forcing him to flee from Wellspring and join the Resistance at their base in the Underground Town, where he gained the trust of the ruthless city and mayor, Redstone. He also learned what happened a century ago from Captain Marshall, who was a victim of Ark himself. General Martin Cross, who was in charge of the Eden Project, sabotaged the operation shortly before 99942 Apophis hit the Earth by ensuring that only the Arks with those loyal to him were open on schedule, with the first wave of these Ark victims eventually forming the Authority. The remaining arks should stay underground forever in hibernation, including Raine's Ark, which arises only because the system is damaged and automatically rises to protect the living population.

With Authority commencing forcibly extending its influence in the slums, the Resistance was forced to act with the help of Raine who was able to recover data showing the location of every Ark on the planet. Captain Marshall plans to use this data to activate all the Arks and form a troop that can defeat the Authority, but the only way to do this is to send data from Capital Prime, the main headquarters for the Authority. Alone, Raine fought through Capital Prime to deliver the Ark activation code, and the game ended with all the remaining Arks simultaneously becoming active and surfacing.

Development

According to design director Matt Hooper, the origin of the game is the concept of muscle cars in the desert environment, which is expanded by the creation of a post-apocalyptic world. A team of about 60 core developers works on the title, which is intended to be the first release of an ongoing franchise.

Rage was originally intended to have a 'Teen' rating, but eventually received 'M' instead. The PC versions of Windows and Xbox 360 are delivered in three dual-layer DVD discs, while the PlayStation 3 version is delivered on a Blu-ray Disc. John Carmack has revealed that uncompressed software from Rage is one terabyte. Versions of PS3, Windows and OS X use OpenGL as a graphics API. While the Linux version is speculating, there has been no confirmation of the official version. Timothee Besset has stated that he will try to create GNU/Linux for Rage as he did in the past, and is expected in 2012 but he resigns from his post in id Software. John Carmack has since revealed on Twitter that there are "no plans for genuine Linux clients". However, this game can be played on GNU/Linux through the Wine compatibility layer.

Id announced his decision to partner with Electronic Arts for the publication of Rage . On March 9, 2009, company CEO Todd Hollenshead told GameTrailers TV, "No, it will not come out this year," when asked about a possible release date. A snapshot and multiple screenshots were released on August 13, 2009 at QuakeCon where it exhibited first-person locations, races and games, and a brief insight into the game's storyline. During Gamescom in Cologne, Germany, Electronic Arts released four new screenshots for Rage .

In 2009, John Carmack proclaimed id Software does not plan to support dedicated servers for Windows versions, and instead will use matchmaking systems like game consoles. ZeniMax Media, which has acquired Software id developers in June 2009, announced that it has taken publishing rights for Rage , and that EA will not be involved in title sales or marketing. The announcement also notes that the development of Rage is not affected by the new agreement. Creative director Tim Willits confirmed for a VG247 blog videogame that the game will fail to be released in 2010, and will launch in 2011. Willits later received an award from IGN Media for "Best Game" and "Best First Person Shooter" on E3. In addition, this game was awarded Best-Person Shooter, Best New IP, Xbox 360, Windows, and PlayStation 3 the best games and Game of the Show of E3 2010 by GameTrailers.

In his speech at QuakeCon 2010 on August 12, 2010, Carmack announced that the id is developing Rage -related work for Apple's iOS. He then describes the Rage phone as a "Rage Rage ... [about] 'Mutant Bash TV', a post-apocalyptic combat game on Rage > wasteland, "and separately hinted that he might try to port Rage Mobile to Android, although he later stated no id title would come to Android due to lack of financial capabilities.

At QuakeCon 2011, Carmack offers a lot of technical insight into the development and the differences between the three major platforms (Windows, Xbox 360, PlayStation 3), noting that it's not easy developing such an optimized engine to run smoothly on the console and still have the best looking game artistically on the console. He also confirmed that the PC platform at the time was 10 times faster than current generation game consoles, but this does not mean 10x performance due to the additional layer of abstraction found in compatible PC operating systems. On September 16, 2011 Bethesda announces Rage has gone gold. On October 4, 2011 the game was released. On February 2, 2012 Rage was released for OS X via digital distribution. The Mac version, dubbed Rage: Campaign Edition , includes bonus content from Anarchy Edition on other systems. However, multiplayer content is not in the initial Mac release.

Mods

The modding tool for Rage will initially be released with the game itself but released on February 8, 2013 in Steam. Rage Tool Kit A titled or simply Studio id, the tools are used to create games and DLC.

Downloadable content

Downloadable content (DLC) is mentioned to be planned for all platforms. The Wasteland Sewer Missions package DLC, an integral part of the Campaign Edition , was released on October 4, 2011, providing access to the sewer system. The code for DLC is given as a pre-order bonus with Anarchy Edition which allows early and free access to DLC. The player characters are assigned tasks by people from different cities to clear their city prey gutters from mutant lice.

Anarchy Edition add-on DLC was released on February 15, 2012 which contains all content from Anarchy Edition, excluding the free WLC Sewast Missions Pack DLC code. This package updates the standard edition of Rage to Anarchy Edition .

The new Rage DLC release called The Scorchers was released on December 18, 2012 for Windows, Xbox 360, and PlayStation 3. The plot focuses on 'The Scorchers', a bandit that is cut from the final release of the main game and only encountered in vehicle fighting missions. The Scorchers hatch a plan to eliminate all life by destroying Wasteland and it is up to the main character to save mankind. DLC adds the difficulty level of "Ultra Nightmare" and the ability to keep playing games even after the main questline is over. The package features new characters, six new areas, new minigames, new enemies and a new weapon called Nailgun featuring three different types of ammunition. DLC also fixes some bugs inside the game.

On January 20, 2011 Bethesda's vice president of public relations, Pete Hines, told VG247 that the game demos were not possible, although one was later released on the Xbox Live Marketplace. On April 18, 2011 it was revealed that those who booked earlier games will receive automatic upgrades to the Anarchy Edition of the game, which includes four exclusive in-game items. Tim Willits claims the modding tool will be available a few days after the release, although this proves to be untrue. The light version of the game is featured in the fourth season episode of "Problem Dog" and "Hermanos" from Breaking Bad . On September 13, 2011, it was reported that Breaking Bad will be referenced in the game in three special ways. A viral campaign was released featuring the power of Los Angeles Clippers forward Blake Griffin where he took action to get himself in a game like dipping a tiger to impress developers.

The earth has been destroyed by collisions with asteroids, with a small fraction of the surviving population in the Arks that survive far below its surface. Those who survive appear to find deserts controlled by a global military dictatorship called the Authority. But a rescued scientist knows that the Authority has lied to him and other survivors about how this new world happened. On March 30, 2011, Bethesda announced that they will be working with Del Rey Books to create a novel based on Rage . The novel was written by Matthew J. Costello, also responsible for video games. Reception

This game received a lot of recognition before it was released. It won the Game Critics Awards from E3 2010 for "Best Console Game", and "Best Action Game", along with "Special Rewards for Graphics". IGN awarded "Best Game" and "Best Shooter" in their E3 2010 awards. It also won numerous GameTrailers' E3 2010 awards, including "Best New IP", "Best First Person Shooter", "Best PS3 Game", "Best Xbox 360 Game", "Best PC Game", and "Game of the Show".

Rage received generally positive reviews across all platforms except the iOS version, which received average reviews, according to the Metacritic aggregate review site. The game received praise for its graphics and shooting mechanics, and the criticism was mostly aimed at game stories and poor PC compatibility out of the box.

EGMNow praised the Xbox 360 version and said it featured impressive visuals, brutal and satisfying battles, smooth animations and sophisticated AI enemies, lots of entertaining side missions, and an addictive multiplayer component. The only complaint they have with Rage is that the final boss's battle is not satisfactory compared to other impressive battle scenarios. GameZone delivers the same console version 8.5 out of 10 and calls it "a great experience coupled with some really fun games and some really impressive graphics. This is not enough Borderlands meets Fallout Ars Technica gives a more negative review of the Xbox 360 version, criticizing the lack of stories, undeveloped characters, unattractive searches and" broken storage systems "(autosave checkpoints far apart, forcing often to store the manual is slow on the Xbox 360), while recognizing its visual quality. Edge gives it seven out of ten and calls it "stunning FPS, but that seems to be stuck between the desire to innovate and the desire to be faithful to the template created by the creator. "

Game Informer says that "while most people will be raving about Rage technology, the most memorable component of the game is the game... enemies mutate from waste... crawling out of wood, running along the wall. , and creates an absolute sense of terror, "and" the challenge posed to the player is to lower it quickly or pray that any close blast picks up large pieces of meat. "The soundtrack is described as" moody just right ", and the animation system as one" most impressive "ever made. However, the review also states that "the driving part is nothing more than an optional redirect" and "the lack of content in the outside world is disappointing". In conclusion, the story and the outside world are described as "dated", but "pounding beating" is touted as a "good speed change" that "stands out in a crowded market". IGN praised game graphics, calling them some of the best, but criticizing forgotten games and characters. In Japan, where the game is ported on October 6, 2011 (the same release date as Australia), Famitsu gives the PS3 and Xbox 360 versions the score is two nine, one eight, and one nine for a total of 35 from 40.

411Mania gives the PS3 version a score of eight out of ten and says it "does not mean a bad game.It has a solid shooter with great graphics and strong controls, but many other games have done the same thing now. Rage is still a good game and will encourage shooter fans until other shooters release it later this year Do not expect any breakthrough here. " Digital Spy gives the same console version four stars out of five and calls it" a mixture of antique shooter mechanics and high-octane driving segments. The end result is a title that captures the essence of its genre, its predecessors while offering something new to the fans. The Tech 5 id machine ensures that this is the best release from the studio to date, and the many features it offers make it one of the most rewarding. "Softpedia gives the Xbox 360 version a score of four stars out of five and call it a "must-have, must-play game." Digital Repair gives the same console version eight out of ten and calls it "vote purchase". The Guardian gives the same console version with the same score of four stars out of five and calls it "a clear mixed affair. This is not perfect, some of it feels pretty old-fashioned, and that does not mean high water moments in the FPS genre that Doom and Quake are in their day, but it's still very exciting and great fun, and in its best moments, it can not be matched with pure entertainment value. "

However, The Daily Telegraph gave the Xbox 360 version three-and-a-half stars out of five and called it "a game that would benefit from being efficient, with an additional FPS level replacing awkward driving. It's supposed to be a game id. Instead it occupies home half bizarre between Borderlands, MotorStorm and Doom, not RPG, not enough racers and not FPS. " The AV Club provides a console version similar to C and says that "the bigger plot... is wholesale uplifted from Fallout 3 , Borderlands and BioShock , make Rage forever change between reverence of love and plagiarism overtly. In the end, Rage is an unsafe, too busy game that tries too hard to be too a lot of things, and ends with a greasy sweat of cold sweat on his eyebrows. "

Rage was also recognized in several award ceremonies at the end of 2011. It was nominated for "Best Graphics" and "Best New Franchise" at the 2011 Xbox Awards Best Preview Game. GameTrailers nominated for "Best First Person Shooter" and "Best New IP". At the 2011 Spike Video Game Awards, it was nominated for "Best Graphics" and "Best Shooter". Technical issues with the PC version cause articles that explain to users how to "fix" the Rage 'issue . AMD has released drivers that are trying to fix some issues. On October 10, 2011, patches for the Windows version were released which added various graphical options to the game and fixed up a number of driver-related graphics issues.

Former Epic Games designer Cliff Bleszinski expressed his disappointment with Rage , saying that the lack of a multiplayer Deathmatch is something he does not expect to come from. He listed Rage as one of the two biggest disappointing games of 2011 (the other being Uncharted 3: Drake's Deception ).

Sequel

The sequel is planned by the developer after the game release. Although the project was canceled in 2012 which supports the focus on Doom , continued development of the sequel is considered a possibility.

A sequel, , is hinted by Bethesda's Pete Hines, who believes that both Rage and Evil Within have been sold enough to secure the sequel.

In mid-May 2018, rumors of the sequel were triggered when Canada's Walmart website updated the video game section with several unreleased titles, including Rage 2 . Bethesda mocks Walmart through social media in the days that followed, but this turned into a direct hint of the existence of a sequel. Bethesda officially revealed Rage 2 on May 14, 2018 with teaser footage and game gameplay the next day. This game is a joint development between id Software and Avalanche Studios, and is expected to be released on Microsoft Windows, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in the second quarter of 2019.
