Root invasion is an invasion of plant roots with undesirable effects.

Biological
When the roots of plants or neighboring trees invade other areas of the plant there will be a decline in health and end up throwing away plants whose space is being attacked. In planted areas, periodic inspections during planting and maintenance may allow discovery and removal of the attacker's roots.

Plumbing
When plant roots spread in the search for nutrients, they will opportunistically enter the irrigation or drainage by blockage of the resulting line. 5% of gutter blockage is associated with root invasion, although damage reports of lines due to intrusions are rare. Clay and concrete pipes are more likely to be attacked then PVC pipe, with pipe connections being a typical entry mode for roots.
Structural
Roads, sidewalks and foundations can all experience structural problems from tree roots. Several control methods have been tried, ranging from obstacles to driving growth in the desired direction. Selection of plants with root systems that will not conflict with nearby structures is the most effective method of damage control.
