Gameplay

State of Decay contains elements of battle and simulation of third persons (building bases and posts). Players are responsible for a small group of survivors and can follow the story line or perform a task that ensures the survival of their community. The game world is 16 square kilometers, 8 square kilometers can be played.

Players can choose from multiple locations to build the base, then strengthen and improve it with various facilities such as clock tower, garden, bed, kitchen, workshop, medical bay, etc. To help keep the survivors safe and healthy. Part of the game balances resource use: food, medicine, ammunition, and construction materials. They can be obtained by scavenging, trading with NPCs, only food that can be planted at the base.

Players can interact with survivors outside of their group: trade with them, help them, or recruit them. The game has two meter relationships, the first determines whether a survivor can be recruited, and the second determines whether they can be controlled. Only one survivor can be controlled at a time, even if a player can require AI-controlled casualties to accompany them, and on a particular mission, one or more AI-controlled survivors will accompany the player.

Storyline mode has about 150 characters, with various facial and clothing features. Each character has a fixed set of "traits" that gives them advantages or disadvantages (such as tires coming out easier, or can improve certain skills faster). Except for characters related to the story, most characters can be assigned to survivors and recruits. Each character also has a "attitude" parameter, influenced by a game event (near-death experience, death of another character, or after completing a difficult task). These attitudes can affect their behavior, sometimes requiring player intervention.

Zombies are a major threat in the state of Decay. They respawn indefinitely (unless the player builds the outpost, which prevents the appearance), is attracted to the noise, and is able to run almost as fast as the characters. Players can choose to confront them directly, use stealth to sneak past them, or divert them using items like firecrackers. In addition, there is a special type of zombie, such as "Ferals" that resemble an animal or "Juggernauts" like a tank that is quite dangerous in a one-on-one confrontation. This game has no human enemies, just zombies.

The game has more than 100 different weapons, including about 30 melee weapons that can be found while scavenging (they can not be made). The melee weapons and firearms are subdivided into sub-categories, which have different animation and attack effects. All weapons have a resistance rating, and will break when used excessively without repair. In addition to weapons, players can find or create a variety of consumables to increase their survival chances, such as painkillers and pipe bombs. In addition to running, players have access to several types of cars, each with its own characteristics such as maneuverability and speed. All vehicles can be damaged and destroyed when running past zombies or crashing through obstacles, although they can be repaired at the base.

Plot

This story takes place in the fictitious Trumbull Valley. The first playable character is Marcus Campbell, a shop clerk. After returning from a fishing trip with his friend and a local Trumbull, Ed Jones, he finds that the world has turned into a zombie apocalypse. The two soon joined Maya Torres, a soldier. They get a walkie-talkie and make contact with Lily Ritter. Following his direction, they headed to a church called the Ascension Church, where Lily and several other survivors had made the base. With Ed hurt, the trio accept Lily's offer to let them stay.

As the game progressed, the survivors became aware of the United States Army presence in Trumbull Valley, led by Sgt Erik Tan and Captain Diane Montressor. They soon learned that the army's top priority was not to evacuate survivors, but to hold back and try to find the cause of the plague. The players also found the local civilian leader, Judge Lawton, has barricaded the courthouse with local law enforcement. He puts citizens in his care under martial law, planning to rebuild after a zombie invasion blows. Finally, the players are also introduced to The Wilkersons, a group of gunungan runners who use the apocalypse to seek profit and exploit other survivors.

Toward the end, the courthouse falls into a zombie attack and Judge Lawton dies. Captain Montressor was evacuated, leaving Sergeant Tan and his men. The player, along with Tan, found many bodies dumped in the reservoir, explaining the cause of the plague. With long-term survival no longer an option, they plan to leave the valley. After robbing a zombie-infested warehouse for explosives, the group headed to the only road that led out of the valley, now blocked by a massive concrete wall.

While Tan prepares the explosives, the player holds the incoming zombies. Tan realizes the detonator is working, and the explosives can not be detonated from a safe distance. He volunteered to blow it up manually, claiming that he was already infected. She sacrificed herself and lit the explosives, which destroyed the walls. As the smoke disappears, the players see the other side also filled with cars and bodies destroyed, implying doomsday has spread beyond Trumbull Valley. The survivors left the valley and the game ended.

To proceed to the next level, players need to look for RV, which spawns in random locations across the map with each level. The players are only allowed to take a total of six characters (including Lily) with them to the next level.
