In baseball, at bat ( AB ) or time at bat is a batter blow against the pitcher. An bat is different from the appearance of the plate. A batter is credited with the appearance of a plate regardless of what happens during a turn in bats. A batter is credited with a bat only if the appearance of the plate does not have any of the results mentioned below. While in bats used to calculate certain statistics, including batting averages and slugging percentages, a player can qualify for an end-of-season rating in this category only if he collects 502 appearance plates during the season.

A dough will not accept credit for a bat if its plate appearance ends under the following circumstances:

  • He accepts ball bottom (BB).
  • He was hit by a throw (HBP).
  • He hit a sacrificial fly or a bunt victim (also known as sacrifice of the victim).
  • He was given first base because of interference or obstruction, usually by catcher.
  • He was replaced by another batter before his bats finished, in which case the appearance of the plate and related stats went to the pinch hammer (unless he replaced with two strikes and his successor completed a Coret, in this case in bats and strikethrough still charged to the first dough).

In addition, if the inning ends while he is still in the bat (because the third out performed by a runner caught stealing, for example), there will be no appearance of bat or plate. In this case, the dough will come back in the next inning, although the count will be reset to no balls and no strikes.

Section 10.02.a.1 of the Major League Baseball legislation defines a bat as: "How many times was hit, except that no time in the bat will be imposed when a player: (1) hit a bunt or sacrifice a sacrifice; (2) given first base on the four balls called; (3) hit a pitched ball, or (4) given first base due to interference or obstruction... Recordings

Pete Rose has 14,053 careers in bats, the all-time major league record. The single-season record is held by Jimmy Rollins, who has 716 in 2007; Willie Wilson, Ichiro Suzuki and Juan Samuel also have over 700 bats in a season.

14 players share a single 11 game record on bats in one game, all of which are additional games. In the game of 9 innings or fewer, the record is 7 on the bat and has occurred more than 200 times.

The team's record for most bats in a season is 5,781 by the Boston Red Sox in 1997.

In bats as phrase

"On bat", "top", "in bat", and "on plate" are all phrases that describe the dough that faces the pitcher. Note that just because a player is described as a "bat" in this sense, he does not need to be given a bat in his stats; the phrase actually signifies a display of plates (assuming it's finally done). This ambiguous terminology is usually clarified by context. To refer explicitly to the technical meaning of "at bat" described above, the term "official in bats" is sometimes used.
