A speaker grille (or speaker grill ) is commonly found in front of many consumer and industrial loudspeakers, and consists of a hard/soft/grille screen mounted directly above the face of the driver speaker. Its main purpose is to protect the driver elements and internal speakers (and possibly other audio components) from foreign objects while still allowing the sound to pass through clearly. However, as it sits on the driver's direct path, the grille interacts with the resulting sound. Appropriate compromise between protection and sound quality should be made based on the speaker application.

Soft Grilles

The soft grille can be made of any suitable fabric, weaving, stitching, foam, upholsteries fabrics and other similar materials. In general, soft lattices impose little resistance on loudspeakers because the free material moves in unison with sound waves. Since the grille is able to absorb this vibration, the soft lattice (generally) is not easy to crackle except at a very high sound pressure level.

The soft grille offers protection from small, light, and perhaps waterproof objects to some extent but can be vulnerable to tearing, or even stretching enough to reach the driver.

Hard Grilles

Hard grilles can be made of various types of construction materials including metal, wood or plastic. Some solid grilles are made of boards or sheets of materials with holes drilled or cut to allow for the sound to pass, while others are made with thin strips of material either crossed together or equally placed in parallel.

Because hard materials do not move freely with speaker sounds like soft materials, speaker output levels should be considered when designing the grille. A grille with more holes will allow more sound to pass but will offer less protection than small objects. A speaker with too much material in front of the driver will start distorting at a higher level of sound pressure, and in severe cases can damage the speakers, so it is undesirable at least crackling.

Practicality

Some types of speakers have eccentric characteristics such as grille that will interact too much with sound to be practical. Studio monitors, for example, are needed to reproduce audio so accurately that anything in the speaker path can obscure aspects of the sound, and thus rarely seen with the grid.

On the other hand, high-powered subwoofers (such as those used in high-end car audio applications), produce sound waves so strong that the grille may be susceptible to shocks or damage when the driver is under load. All but the most rare gratings also have the possibility to reduce or distort the resulting low frequency waves.

Some speakers do not need a grille, perhaps because they are flanked in a case (such as speakers found inside a personal computer) and are not intended to produce audio with high precision, but only audible tones and sounds.
