Automotive garages and workshops can be divided into the following categories:

• Car parts save or motor factors that also maintain service operations. This is not common in the UK but is more common in the US.
• Car repair shops owned and operated independently. It also includes regional and national chains and franchises including OEM car dealer sites. This means that motorists benefit from open market competition in aftermarket parts, repairs and services thereby reducing service costs through better labor rates and competitive spare parts. Also, some car repair shops provide additional towning services.
• Special car workshops are shops specializing in certain parts such as brakes, exhaust and exhaust systems, transmission, spare parts, car electrification, automotive air conditioning repairs, automotive glass repairs and installation, and wheel alignment or they which only works in certain vehicle or vehicle brands from certain continents in the world. There are also automotive repair shops specializing in vehicle modifications and adjustments. Often, special car workshops will have a variety of infrastructure and facilities (for jobs or special vehicles), as well as technicians and mechanics with different qualifications.
