Bulgarian Passport is an international travel document issued to Bulgarian nationals, and may also serve as evidence of Bulgarian citizenship. In addition to allowing carriers to travel internationally and serve as an indication of Bulgarian citizenship, the passport facilitates the process of obtaining assistance from Bulgarian consular officials overseas or other EU member states in the event that Bulgarian consular does not exist, if required.
According to the 2016 Visa Restriction Index, Bulgarian nationals can visit 154 countries without a visa or with a visa granted upon arrival. Bulgarian nationals may live and work in any country within the European Union as a result of the right to freedom of movement and residence provided in Article 21 of the EU Treaty.
Every citizen of Bulgaria is also a citizen of the European Union. Passports, together with national identity cards allow the right of free movement and residence in one of the states of the European Union, the European Economic Area and Switzerland

Use
For travel within the EU, (Schengen Area and Common Travel Area countries), as well as Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Georgia, Kosovo, Moldova, Montenegro, the Republic of Macedonia, Northern Cyprus and Serbia, Bulgarian nationals do not need to carry passports and only need their national identity card.
Bulgarian Passport grants the holder the right to assistance and protection by Bulgarian diplomatic representatives and overseas consular offices (or to other EU member countries where no Bulgarian country exists).
Passport still belongs to the Republic of Bulgaria.

Physical appearance
Bulgarian passport is a common, red wine-colored, European design with Bulgarian Coat emblazoned in the center of the front cover. Text "???????????" (Bulgarian)/ "European Union" (English), the country's official long name "????????????????" (Bulgaria) and the English form "Bulgarian Republic" is written in uppercase above the emblem, with the word "???????" (Bulgaria)/"passport" (UK) below. It is published for a period of five years, and contains 32 or 48 pages.
Security features include holographic images, micro printing, UV-visible features, watermarks, etc. In addition, passport holders' photos are digitally printed directly onto paper, in standard inks and holographic images. All passports can be read by machines.
Biometric passport
Since March 29, 2010, all newly published Bulgarian passports contain chips with biometric data, and also display text "Bulgarian > "EU" (UK) above the official name of the country, thus reflecting Bulgarian membership in the European Union. Additional design changes include placing photos of famous Bulgarian landmarks and monuments on the pages in the passport. The cost of a new passport is 20 EUR (40 BGN) and with the same validity (5 years).
Passport note
The passport contains notes from the issuing country addressed to the authorities of all other countries, identifies the carrier as a national of that country and requests that he be allowed to pass and be treated in accordance with international norms. The entry in the Bulgarian passport states:
The Government of the Republic of Bulgaria requests all Civil and Military Authorities to leave through this passport holder unimpeded and, where necessary, to provide him with the necessary assistance and assistance in accordance with international law.
