The IP Code: What it Means - STANDARD

IP Code , International Marking Protection , the IEC 60529 standard, sometimes defined as Ingress Protection Marking , classifies and assesses the level of protection afforded to intrusion (body parts such as hands and fingers), dust, accidental contact, and water with mechanical casing and electric enclosures. It is published by the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC). The equivalent European standard is EN 60529.

This standard aims to provide more detailed information to users rather than obscure marketing terms such as waterproof . For example, cell phones rated IP58 are "dustproof" and can be "dipped in 1.5 meters of fresh water up to 30 minutes". Similarly, an IP22-rated power socket is protected from finger insertion and will not be damaged or become unsafe during a particular test where it is exposed to vertical or nearly vertical dripping water. IP22 or IP2X is a general minimum requirement for the design of electrical accessories for indoor use.

The numbers indicate conformity with the conditions summarized in the table below. Digits 0 are used if no protection is provided. Digits are replaced with the letter X when insufficient data has been collected to establish the protection level.

No hyphens in native IP code. IPX-8 (for example) is thus an invalid IP code.

First digit: Solid particle protection

The first digit shows the level of protection provided by the enclosure against access to hazardous components (eg, electrical conductors, moving parts) and the entry of solid foreign bodies.

Second digit: Protection of fluid entry

The second digit indicates the level of protection provided by the enclosure against the entry of hazardous water. Ranking for water entry is not cumulative beyond IPX6. IPX7 compliant devices, which include immersion in water, do not necessarily correspond to IPX5 or IPX6, which include exposure to water jets. Devices that meet both tests are indicated by listing the two tests separated by a slash, e.g. IPX5/IPX7.

(All tests with the letter "K" are defined by ISO 20653 (replacing DIN 40050-9) and not found in IEC 60529, except for IPx9 which is similar to the IP69K water test.)

IP69K

The IP code with the letter "K" comes from ISO 20653: 2013 Road-Level Protection vehicle (IP code), stating that it complies with IEC 60529 except for "K" tests, which describe the specific requirements for road vehicles.

The test determines a water-spray nozzle of 80 Â ° C at 8-10 MPa (80-100 bar) and a flow rate of 14-16 L/min. The nozzle is held 10-15 cm from the tool being tested at an angle of 0 Â °, 30 Â °, 60 Â ° and 90 Â ° for 30 seconds respectively. The test device sits on a rotary table that completes the rotation every 12 seconds (5 rpm). The IPx9 specification on IEC 60529 has details for testing larger specimens that will not fit in a turntable test fixture (see table above).

The IP69K test specs were originally developed for road vehicles, especially those requiring regular intensive cleaning (dump trucks, cement mixers, etc.), but also found in other areas (eg food industry and car wash centers).

The German Standard DIN 40050-9 extends the older IEC 60529 rating system with a IP69K rating for high pressure high pressure laundering applications. DIN 40050-9 has been replaced by ISO 20653: 2013 Road Vehicle-Degree protection (IP code). Such enclosures should not only be dustproof (IP6X), but should also be able to withstand high pressure and steam cleaning. In 2013 IEC 60529 adds a 9-level test of ingress water, with IPx9 essentially a spray test similar to IP69K, also adding a fixture image to verify water pressure.

In the United States, the National Electrical Manufacturers Association defines the NEMA enclosure type in the NEMA standard number 250. The following table describes the IP code of IEC 60529 which each meets the NEMA rating respectively. The ratings between the two standards are not directly equivalent: NEMA ratings also require additional product features and testing (such as functionality under ice sheath conditions, attachments for hazardous areas, disconnected cable connections and others) not addressed by IP ratings.
