History

Initial history

After unsuccessful attempts at the settlement in 1794, the hill overlooking the Horseshoe Strip from the Licking River which flows back and forth from the city is enriched and inhabited c. 1800 by Archibald Prater, Ebenezer Hanna, and others. Originally known as Prater'sÃ, Fort , the community had become LickingÃ, Station at the time of its first post office in 1839.

In 1849, the post office was moved to a community in the city's location and renamed Adamsville after the local landlord William "Uncle Billy" Adams. In addition to its farmland, Adams operates a hotel, a gristmill, tannery and a blacksmith at a new location.

In 1860, Magoffin Co. formed from parts of the nearby Floyd, Johnson, and Morgan regions. Billy Adams donated land to pat and establish a new district seat and the community was renamed "Salyersville" as a thank-you to Head of State Samuel Salyer, who sponsored the bill creating a new county. The post office changed the following year.

During the Civil War, Salyersville fell in difficult times. Due to its location in the Upper South and settlement history by migrants from Virginia, some residents sided with the Confederacy even though there were no slaves in the area. In 1864, Union forces defeated the Confederate invaders in the Battle of Salyersville.

Adams gave more land to the city in 1871 for the construction of the right courthouse. It was completed in 1890 and stood for 67 years before it burned to the ground in 1957.

20th century

Salyersville's first high school, Magoffin County Institute, was founded in 1908 by A.C. Harlowe.

The Great Depression hit Salyersville aloud, because a high percentage of Salyersville residents were laborers or farmers, who saw plant prices fall from 40 to 60%. Nearby mining and logging operations are also closed or production is limited when demand for their products falls sharply. In 1939, the Licking River crested over 25 feet (7.6 m), flooding most of downtown Salyersville and causing extensive property damage.

In 1963, Bert T. Combs Mountain Parkway was completed, stretching 76 miles (76 miles) west of Salyersville to intersection with Interstate 64 at the point east of Winchester. This allows more tourists to visit the area, and heritage tourism begins to help Salyersville develop a changing economy. The first annual Magoffin County Founder Day Festival was held in 1978.

In the winter of 1997, as part of the Deer reindeer deer restoration project, Salyersville became one of the locations chosen for deer release into the wilderness areas of the mountains.

21st century

In 2002, the second Magoffin County courthouse (founded in 1960) was destroyed. Instead, a new Center for Justice was built, which opened in spring 2006. The new Central Justice Architecture plays an offering for the original Magoffin County courthouse.

On March 2, 2012, Salyersville was hit by a tornado that caused massive damage to many businesses and many homes. No casualties were reported in Salyersville March 2 Tornado.
