Darts Lawn (also known as Javelin dart , jarts or yard dart ) is a grass game for two players or teams. A set of grass arrows usually includes four large arrows and two targets. The game and its objectives are similar to horseshoes and darts. The arrows are similar to ancient Rome plumbata . They are usually 12 inches (30 centimeters) long with metal or plastic ends weighing at one end and three plastic fins on the rod at the other. The arrows are meant to be thrown with hands down towards the horizontal ground target, where the weighed end touches first and attaches to the ground. The target is usually a plastic ring, and landing anywhere in the ring gives a score of one point. After many injuries and deaths caused by grass arrows, they have been banned by the United States and Canada.

Rules

There are a number of variations of grass arrows, including Traditional Style and Handly Cup. One variation can be played one on one or two teams. In the team version the player stands with one member of each team at each end (when throwing, they must be sure to stand well back when the other side throws) and throw the arrow to the target of about 35 feet (11 m) (with variations based on player skills and the place where the game is being played).

At Traditional Lawn Darts, points are scored when the arrows land on the target area. Usually if players from each team land an arrow on the target, the score will override each other (so if Team A gets 2 arrows to target, and Team B gets 1 in, Team A gets 1 point and Team B gets 0). Also, some versions of the Lawn arrows include smaller "bull-eye" rings for additional points.

In Handly Cup Style Lawn Darts, the score is based on the darts in the ring and the darts are closer to the ring than the opposing team's arrow. The darts land in the ring, or "ringers", each worth 3 points, and can be canceled by the opponent also throwing arrows to the ring. In addition, each arrow closer to the ring (but outside) than the other arrows by the opposing team is worth one point. This means that if no team successfully darts the ring, Team A has two arrows closer than Tim B arrows, Team A will score 2 points. If Team A has one bow in the ring, and one arrow closer than Tim B arrows, they will get a score of 4 points. If both teams have darts in the ring, it is not possible to dart outside the ring to score points (because it is further from the ring than the opposing team arrow inside). If Team A and Team B each have an arrow inside the ring, and Team A also has an arrow outside the ring but closer to the ring than the other Team B arrows, no team will score points for the round. Handset Style Cup matches are usually played in two teams, with alternating pairs, up to a total score of one team is 21 or more. Additionally, for points to calculate the arrows must be attached to the ground.

Security and restrictions in the US and Canada

Grass darts have been banned for sale in the United States for years. The ban was opposed in court in the late 1970s, prompting the Consumer Product Safety Commission to make compromise decisions allowing their sales provided they were not marketed as toys. However, in April 1987, seven-year-old Michelle Snow was killed by a grass arrow thrown by one of her playmates in her backyard in Riverside, California. The arrows have been purchased, incidentally, as part of a set of several different grass games and stored in the garage, never played before. Michelle's father, David, embarked on a crusade to get the banned grass darts, claiming that there was no way to prevent children getting their hands on the short arrow lawn law from a full ban.

Since part of Snow's lobby, on December 19, 1988, the CPSC restored a direct ban on arrows in the US. In the previous eight years, 6,100 people have been sent to the emergency room because of arrows in the US. Of that number, 81% are 15 years or younger, and half of them are 10 years or younger. That week the commission voted to ban the product, an 11-year-old girl in Tennessee was hit by a grass arrow and was in a coma.

In Canada, grass arrows produce at least 55 serious injuries. They were banned for sale in the country from July 1989. The sale of the second grass arrow was also illegal under the Dangerous Products Act. Since then, alternatives have emerged that are available for sale in Canada and made of plastic.

It is possible to import portions of grass arrows - plastic flights, metal bodies, and steel spigots - as well as a complete set of parts to repair broken arrows to the US and Canada. However, the darts, sets, and kits that are installed are strictly prohibited by the American and Canadian customs authorities.

Starting 2017, a modified version of the grass arrow can be purchased in the United States. The current grass arrow has modified the blunt end design as a security measure.
