Repairing a water damage indicator sticker on your electronics ...

The liquid contact indicator (LCI) is a small indicator that changes from white to another color, usually red, after contact with water. These indicators are small stickers placed at some point in electronic devices like laptops and smart phones. If any device is damaged, the service provider can check if the device may have been exposed to water contact. After contact with water, or other liquids, the device is not covered under warranty. The liquid contact indicator is also known by other names such as water damage tape, water damage sticker, water contact indicator tape, liquid immersion indicator.

The main purpose of the liquid contact indicator is to cause damage to electronic devices. LCI can also be used to avoid discussion of obligations and warranties, if triggered. There is still a reason for doubt.

  • Longer but no extreme lighting on the device in a humid environment can trigger LCI.
  • Theoretically the water can reach LCI (s), but still the electronics underneath are untouched, for example when a small drop of rain falls into the headphone connector.
  • Users must be able to use the device under normal circumstances. For example a smartphone is usually used when traveling, quite often outside. It can rain, or start raining outside. The device does not have to be damaged immediately. Such circumstances can trigger LCI.

Thus, the liquid contact indicator can be triggered, without pointing to the fluid that caused the damage.

Forgery

In its simplest form, the liquid contact indicator is good for leading first to the cause of the defect. LCI can be replaced, they are already available in online electronics stores. But other interests, use in warranty claims, make them vulnerable to potential abuse. Therefore manufacturers are introducing LCIs that are harder to reproduce, even with small holographic details.

Placements

Liquid contact indicator is placed in several places in electronic device. For example under the keyboard in the notebook and in some places on its mainboard. Sometimes the liquid contact indicator is placed so that they can be checked from the outside. For example there is LCI in the headphone connector, dock connector, and near the SIM-card slot of Apple iPhone. In the Samsung Galaxy smartphone there is LCI under the battery cover near the battery contacts.
